Tasting is just paying attention on purpose. Four steps, about a minute, no wrong answers.
- LookTilt the glass over something white. Is it pale, golden, ruby or deep purple?
- SwirlRest the base on the table and make small circles. This wakes up the aromas.
- SniffDip your nose in. Fruit, flowers, spice, toast? Say the first thing that comes to mind.
- SipLet it sit on your tongue. Is it juicy, sharp, silky, long-lasting? Then decide if you like it.
Wine words, in plain English
Dry
Not sweet. That's all. A dry wine can still taste fruity and soft. Read more

The grippy, slightly drying feeling from grape skins and seeds, like strong black tea. Common in reds. Read more
Body
How heavy a wine feels in your mouth. Think skim milk versus whole milk. Read more
Acidity

Finish
How long the flavor lingers after you swallow. A long finish is usually a good sign. Read more
