Swirling adds a little air to the wine and spreads it up the sides of the glass. That releases the aromas, which are most of what you call flavor.
Try it once with a pour you know well. Smell it before and after. The difference is often surprising.
Keep the glass on the table while you start, and only fill it a third full. Spilling is part of learning.
