In wine, dry simply means not sweet. It says nothing about how the wine feels in your mouth. Many people who say they like sweeter wines are actually enjoying dry wines that are very fruity.
So if a dry wine tastes puckering, that's usually tannin or acidity, not dryness. Those are different things, and once you can tell them apart, ordering gets a lot easier.
Next time you're unsure, try describing what you like in normal words: juicy, smooth, crisp, cozy. A good shop or server can work with that.
